Gaining Control Over Reactivity

Gem- German Shepherd Dog
Program: 1 on 1 Private Training Sessions

“When I first got my dog Gem, she was an 11 month old German Shepherd Dog bred from working lines. She had some basic obedience training and had had some socialization but was developing some issues with other dogs while on walks.  She reacted to other dogs she encountered in the same manner that they reacted to her (i.e. if they lunged, so did she). She seemed to find small dogs particularly annoying. I was encouraged to find a trainer that would use the same training philosophy and used similar training devices that I had used training another dog in another province.

I learned of Becky and Best K9  Dog Training from the staff at our local Veterinary clinic. Based on our discussions, I felt that Becky was likely a good fit as a trainer. I was also told that if she couldn’t help me, Becky would likely be able to recommend someone who could help.

Becky met my family and Gem and carried out an assessment of where we were and of what we wanted as an end product. Based on her assessment we had a few more issues to deal with that were not apparent to us, but when pointed out, the issues were evident.  Becky recommended a training plan and a course of action to move forward. Gem and I finished the private lessons and are now participating in the group lessons. I have seen a positive change in the relationship between Gem and me.  She is more attentive, engaged and is much more eager to please. We, both Gem and I, are much more confident and we are both better able handle the situations we encounter while out on walks. I do not yet have the “super” dog that we would all love to have, but I have a far better companion and a plan to continue the positive development of my dog.

I am extremely pleased with the results and I am very pleased with how Becky got us to where we are today.  Her instructions are easy to follow and very straight forward, so it was easy to learn.  The hard part was not teaching the dog so much as it was teaching me how to get the results that I wanted. The training concepts are easy to see, but it is in the execution of the commands in a consistent manner to gets the results that is the difficulty.

Becky frequently used her personal dog Roxie, to demonstrate what the final outcome for the different lesson/concept was to look like, then she assisted me with in carrying out the action/activity with Gem. Becky also uses Roxie as a very controlled distraction when the situation or objective of the lesson required a distraction.

Becky has demonstrated a sincere interest in the positive outcomes and wants us to succeed. She is very open to additional sessions private or otherwise, to address any issues or problems that may arise.

Finally, Becky goes beyond expectations to try and make the training enjoyable for both the dog and the owner by varying the locations, varying the objectives, and going the extra distance to make them fun sessions.
